Sweet Corner is an underestimated and definitely overlooked place. Maybe because it’s in a quieter part of town? Maybe because the word just hasn’t gotten out yet? But either way, it is certainly not a destination, but is more of a place you just happen to wander into because you’re passing by and need a little pick me up.

I, too, discovered the place by happenstance and out of desperation. I just really needed a chocolate fix, you know? And there was nothing around, so when I saw this, I figured beggars can’t be choosers and walked in. I didn’t know what to make of it at first. It’s a small shop, without real seating (a few stools along a counter), but a ton of sweets to choose from. I wondered if they were just pre-manufactured, generic treats until I saw that this small shop had a huge kitchen in the back with heavy duty baking equipment. Turns out, they make everything themselves, fresh daily. Always a good sign, so I gained a little confidence in this place and took in my options.

First, the cookies. Upon looking closely, they really looked pretty good. Plenty of options like the m&m cookie (far too uncommon, in my opinion), the red Nutella bomb (imagine a red velvet cookie with Nutella stuffed in the middle), and the snickerdoodle, not to mention two chocolate chip cookies: one with sea salt and the other without. Apparently they are most well known for their salted version, though both are made with 4 different types of Callebaut Belgian chocolate – dark chocolate cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate chips, milk chocolate chunks, and dark chocolate chunks. For the salted version, they use French sea salt.

I’ll pause here to just express my own personal delight at the fact that they still offer the classic, non-salted chocolate chip cookie, even though they are known for the salted one. Non-salted cookies are bizarrely almost becoming difficult to find these days. I mean gosh, when will this “sea salt” on every dessert trend finally disappear? If you want a sweet and savory combination, go eat some peanut butter. Otherwise, please leave my sweets alone and stop adding a “touch of salt” to top them all off!

Next up, the cheesecakes with options like blueberry, dulce de leche, and even guava. Not to mention your typical treats like brownies, blondies, and cupcakes.

And let’s not forget their homemade cakes, which are moist and flavorful, and achieve a feat that few other bakeshops achieve: they are frosted extremely minimally. For that, they get extra bonus points. There really isn’t a bakery out there that doesn’t exaggerate the amount of frosting between the cake layers these days, and this place does just the opposite – their cakes have nearly a paper thin layer, which is so perfect. As a result, the cakes are not too sweet and don’t weigh you down at all. Some of the cakes don’t even have frosting, but are layered with something else entirely, like the Coconut Pound Cake that has a super thin layer of dulce de leche inside. Or the Brigadeiro Chocolate Cake, a fantastic and creative nod to the owner’s Brazilian heritage, which contains a thin layer of silky chocolate truffle and is topped with chocolate cream. It’s a lovely play on the classic brigadeiro (akin to a chocolate truffle), which is perhaps the most famous Brazilian dessert.

These can be paired with any beverage from their full offering of hot and cold coffee and tea beverages. And if you happened to wander in here not looking for anything sweet, you’re also in luck because they have a few savory items too, like bagels, sandwiches, and even quiches.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this place and I hope you come across its path one day, whether accidentally or on purpose. For an under-the-radar, neighborhood joint, it was refreshingly good quality. They take custom and large orders as well. So I say go in and try a sweet and if you like it, which I think you will, consider ordering a larger batch for your next occasion.
