Nunu Chocolates has one of the best frozen hot chocolates in New York. And you don’t stumble upon good frozen or iced hot chocolates every day.
I don’t really understand the recent string of negative reviews of Nunu Chocolates. Whatever the reason, I just completely disagree. I have been on a chocolate quest for years in NYC and most recently have been on an iced/frozen hot chocolate mission. These are quite hard to find in NYC and elsewhere. The concept is somewhat new and it isn’t nearly as popular as regular hot chocolate. But I had heard that Nunu Chocolates had one of the best frozen hot chocolates, so after trying almost every other one I’d found in the city, I made it over here.
The frozen hot chocolate is just fantastically delicious. They make it using about 2 ounces of milk (whole, skim, or almond), ice, and their homemade thick ganache. They pretty much scoop the ganache out of a huge container with an ice cream scoop – that’s how thick it is. I was very skeptical. When I saw the method, I thought it would be artificial and watered down. It ended up being the second best frozen hot chocolate I’ve had in the city.
The chocolate they use in their frozen hot chocolate is only 53% cocoa, so there is definitely sweetness to it, but it’s not as sweet as plain milk chocolate would’ve been. It isn’t watery in the slightest, but it also isn’t too thick and heavy like a milkshake. It has substance, form, and amazing flavor. The small is $5.50 and the large is $6, so you should obviously get the large. I would get it again in a heart beat.
As for the place itself, it’s tiny and not really ideal for hanging out. There are a few seats, but it’s not really a welcoming, relaxing atmosphere. It was also FREEZING when we went in. I get that it’s summer, but there’s no reason to make your cafe feel like winter. And I do have to say the one employee in the store was not very personable at all. You’d think she would’ve jumped at the chance to be friendly and chat with us given that there were no other customers. But she did not – in fact, she almost seemed a bit disturbed by our presence.
Nonetheless, the chocolate is fantastic and as this is a chocolatier, that’s what counts. Go try the frozen hot chocolate for a delicious summer cool-down.
