We’ve been here 3 times now and each time it’s been excellent. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a building, with another restaurant on the ground floor. You go up a set of stairs and into this large, open space. It’s a nice, comfortable environment and even when the restaurant is busy, it doesn’t feel cramped. Lovely, traditional wooden décor and a fantastic huge candle that is covered in decades of candle wax.
The owner, Judy, is very nice, though sometimes overwhelmed. Her husband dines in a couple of times a week and we often see him sitting at a table for one with a bottle of wine and a meal of his choice. It’s cute, actually.
Our favorite dishes here are the Kaeng Kiew (green curry) and the Pad Krapow (spicy Thai basil with chilli), both with veggies (no tofu, no mushroom, extra broccoli) and they’re totally fine with the customization.
The spicy Thai basil is such a classic, but not all Thai places manage to execute this well. These days, it’s usually overly sweetened with corn syrup, sugar, or something else. This one isn’t at all. It’s perfect the way it comes, really authentic, no changes necessary. I always order this dish extra hot (“Thai hot”) and 2 out of the 3 times, they got it right. The other time I just requested chilli powder on the side instead of having them remake it. The flavors are there, they don’t skimp on veggies, and the basil really comes through.
The curries are also really great and definitely not as heavy or sweet as other Thai curry dishes. The coconut milk can make these dishes so heavy and sweet, but they have the balance right here. The green curry has the perfect about of spice and is very fresh and flavorful. The Choo Chee (similar to panang curry) is quite unique and fantastic. It’s also a curry for those who don’t like traditional Thai coconut milk curry because there is very little sauce and it’s much thicker and less sweet than normal.
Rice is additional, but that’s standard, and they are more generous with their portions than most other places. The Thai iced tea, though, is nothing to write home about – a bit too sweet and watery.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in the area or even worth a trek. It’s a nice neighborhood to be in anyway, so you’ll have plenty to do and there isn’t Thai food this good in the surrounding area.
