Landmarc

There are two locations of Landmarc, one in the Time Warner center in Columbus Circle and the other in Tribeca. The original is the one in CC and the Tribeca location is a great addition. We’ve been to both and I much prefer Tribeca. It has a lovely ambiance – simple, elegant, and modern, but not at all stuffy or exclusive feeling. It’s a smaller space and very tastefully decorated.

Though it wasn’t full when we went for weekend brunch, there was a pretty steady flow of customers and the dining area was close to total capacity the entire time. Our waiter was attentive and asked for our drink orders and read us the specials promptly.

Pain Perdu – what the French call French toast (they don’t call it French toast, just like the Swiss don’t call it Swiss cheese). This is the highlight of the brunch menu and at least one person in your party must order it. If no one likes french toast, then don’t go here for brunch. It is the thickest cut of French toast you have ever seen (at least 4 inches tall) and is crispy on the outside, incredibly soft on the inside. Great chew. Topped only with powdered sugar and served with a side of maple syrup. Fantastic dish, but still some room for improvement as flavor wise it could stand to add some type of accompaniment like fresh berries.

Egg white omelette – fillings change every so often. Served with hash browns and greens. I asked whether I could substitute fresh fruit for hash browns (since each is listed as an $8 side dish), but they said no. I then asked for toast instead of hash browns, clearly a cheaper item, and they agreed.

When the omelette came, it had goat cheese in it, which I had specifically asked to remove. They apologized, remade it right away, and as a gesture served it with the fresh fruit I had originally requested (and let me have the toast as well). The omelette was actually very good. Nice texture, was thick and somewhat dense, prepared dry (which is the way I’d requested it), and had good flavor.

I would go back to this location of Landmarc. Overall a good experience. Only negative is that it’s at the higher end of price points as far as brunches go, but it’s a nice experience with good food, so it’s justifiable.
