This review is only for the cheesecake and the Mississippi Mud Pie and will be quite short and sweet.
We could talk for hours about cheesecake and all the things wrong with it in the UK (it’s too sweet instead of being tart or tangy, people seem to think that “plain cheesecake” is supposed to mean “vanilla cheesecake”, the texture isn’t great, the flavor is off, etc.), but I’ll spare you. But this past weekend at JW Steakhouse (near the Dorchester in Mayfair), we found the perfect one. It’s self-proclaimed to be “the best cheesecake this side of the pond,” which we absolutely did not believe would be true, but we now absolutely agree is.
It’s a large portion (1+ pounds in weight) and is priced at £14, which I initially thought was outrageous, but now see is actually worth. It is perfect. Unsweet, creamy, velvety, sour, tart, fresh, light. Yes, perfect.
There is more biscuit than in a traditional cheesecake as it’s not only the base, but also the circumference. Normally, this could detract. But here, the biscuit is so good and adds a bit of substance and some nice sweetness to balance out the tart flavor that the cheesecake should and does have.
And geez that Mississippi Mud Pie (£8), with the smooth chocolate filling on top of the chocolate biscuit base. Lovely and delicious. Sweeter than the cheesecake, but so very good.
Please go. Please try the desserts – or at the very least just the cheesecake. Yes, you will have to get over the cost because it is undeniably steep, but once you start eating it you will immediately forget about the price tag and start planning your next trip back.
We couldn’t love it more than we do nor could we recommend it more strongly than we do. We have introduced many-a-people to it and everyone has reacted just as strongly. Go!
