We went for a weekend brunch and made reservations ahead of time, which I would recommend. The place was quite packed around 1 pm on a Saturday. We were seated downstairs, which I think I actually preferred to the upstairs. It was cozy, comfortable, and old-school. Lots of dark wood, but not stuffy and pretentious.
Our server started out not very friendly and we didn’t really understand why. By the end of the meal, though, she had warmed up a bit. It was somewhat off-putting at first, but she could’ve just been having a stressful day. The manager, however, was very pleasant and we encountered her because of an initial problem with one of the dishes we ordered.
We wanted breakfast food, so we settled on the pecan granola & yogurt, health nut, and prison eggs.
Pecan Granola & Yogurt – comes with a bowl of plain yogurt with mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries), one mint leaf, and the pecan granola mixture in a jar on the side. You pour the granola into the yogurt yourself. This dish was quite delicious and I’d recommend it.
Health Nut – this is an egg white omelette with goat cheese and spinach. I requested tomatoes instead of goat cheese – no problems. I also requested light oil on the dish. This was where we encountered the problem. The waitress said she would inform the kitchen, but then when the dish was brought out, it was not only sitting in a 1 cm high vat of oil, but there had been some drizzled on top as well. When we informed the waitress of this, she said that it was pan cooked and they just cook it in that much oil naturally. Well that’s fine, but I had requested light oil, so clearly they didn’t adjust for my request. They ended up re-making the dish, quite quickly so I wouldn’t have to wait long, and the second time it was just to my liking. The manager came to make sure that the second version was good, which I appreciated, and the waitress even followed up as well. It was actually delicious and I would get it again. I will say it was stuffed with loads of spinach, so they didn’t skimp on the ingredients either.
Prison Eggs – scrambled eggs, jalapeno, borlotti beans (large white beans), spring onion all on top of a large piece of grilled wheat toast. This is definitely a hearty dish and very tasty. There were tons of jalapenos (so I would recommend asking for just a few if you don’t want it too spicy) and tons of beans as well. Portion was filling, particularly given the combination of eggs, beans, and bread. Would recommend this dish as well.
I can’t speak for the meal foods, but I thought the breakfast dishes were really good and would come back to have them again.
