Havana Alma De Cuba

Vaca Frita
Vaca Frita

We are huge fans of Cuba, this restaurant’s sister restaurant, and while I think Cuba is the better restaurant overall, this one is pretty close and has a very similar menu.

This restaurant actually has three rooms. When you walk in, there is a small room with a bar and live music. Then you transition to an outdoor patio/garden with a bunch of tables. Perfect for warm weather. Then you are led into another room, which tends to be more quiet unless the place is packed. They fill the rooms in order starting from the front.

Vaca Frita – shredded skirt steak sautéed with onions, peppers, scallions and garlic, served with steamed yuca with garlic mojo and guacamole. Though this dish was delicious, the meat was too dry as though it’d been a bit fried to death. If it hadn’t been so dry, this dish would’ve been a home run as the flavors were bold and tasty.

Arroz con Pollo
Arroz con Pollo Criollo

Arroz con Pollo Criollo – saffron rice, shredded chicken, sweet pea, piquillo peppers. The flavor of this is delicious, but unlike other arroz con pollo dishes, it’s might lighter on the vegetables and heavier on the chicken. Also unlike a classic arroz con pollo, the chicken is not diced throughout the rice, but sitting on top. Good portion, and flavorful. Also, just note that the chicken is not breast meat.

Mango Breeze – mango rum, cranberry and lemon juice with mango nectar. Super sweet and anyone who loves mango will find this delicious.

Margarita – classic lime margarita on the rocks. This wasn’t good. Not only was it super weak, it was also completely flavorless. Not sour, not sweet, tasted like water.

Food is a hit and ambiance is nice, but given the choice between this place and Cuba, I’d go back to Cuba.
