The best crumpet I have ever had in my life. Actually one of the best breads I’ve ever had in my life. Though this place is known for its tea (as the name suggests), it is absolutely essential that you order the crumpet when you go.
The crumpets are homemade and prepared daily. And unlike every other crumpet in the world, these are square! Which is actually perfect because it works so much better with one of their many toppings offered. This brings me to my second point, which is that they are one of the few places to offer marmite. Marmite is a British deep-brown colored spread made from yeast extract. It is savory, very salty, and often spread on toast or other types of bread. Other topping options include butter & salt, jam, and avocado.
We ordered a cream cheese crumpet and a marmite and cheddar crumpet with the four seasons oolong tea. The crumpets are served warmed on a special plate that is meant to hold both the tea and the crumpet. They are out of this world. Soft, dense, airy, flavorful. I am obsessed. It is just absolutely the best crumpet you’ll find.
Also, I’d recommend going with another person and ordering 3 crumpets between the two of you. I know this is a bit particular, but I can guarantee that after you eat 1 crumpet, you’ll be thinking that you reeeally wished you had a few more bites. If you go with another person, you can split the 3rd crumpet and it will make you feel a lot better. You won’t be in longing until the next time you happen to go.
Good & Proper Tea also serves a few other breakfast foods, soup (on weekdays), quiche, and some sweet and savory pastries, but I’d recommend skipping those options. You can, of course, also order coffee drinks if you don’t drink tea, but they do have a nice and extensive tea selection and they will work with you to find one that suits your taste. You can also smell the tea leaves to get a sense of the flavor.
There are several locations around London, including a food truck, but the one on Leather Lane is the only one that serves the crumpets on the weekends, too. It’s also a really lovely space – very relaxing, calm, clean. A lot of people bring a laptop and settle down to do work or go with a small group of people to chat and catch up.
