Dark Sugars is a chocolate shop that sells unique, good quality chocolates. It was started by a West African woman who is passionate and well-informed about chocolate. At the store, you can hear Senegalese music playing and browse the various piles and heaps of chocolates displayed on the tables. Unlike most chocolateries, this one doesn’t take itself too seriously and allows you to interact directly with the chocolate. By that I mean you grab a bag and pick out whatever chocolate you want yourself. At the end, you have it weighed and pay accordingly.
This system, and the store’s fun vibe, is not an indication that the quality of chocolate is subpar, though. Quite the opposite – it’s good quality and pretty delicious. They have a variety of unique and fun flavors as well as your traditional plain truffles. The overdose truffle: a dark chocolate cocao coated truffle (in the shape of a lemon wedge) is my favorite. It literally melts in your mouth, but also has a bit of texture from the thin chocolate shell coating it. The cocao dust on top makes it darker and richer. One truffle to try if you’d like to bring out your inner kid is the popping candy truffle: dark chocolate truffle with pop rocks!
The store also has made to order hot chocolates that use real chocolate that they shave in front of you. The hot chocolate comes in a variety of flavors including cardamom, chilli, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and of course plain. You can choose whether you want milk, dark, or white chocolate. Please don’t go with the white chocolate, though – try the real thing and do this drink some justice!
There are two locations, both on Brick Lane about a 10 minute walk apart.
