Carpo

This place is a bit interesting because it’s not strictly a chocolatier, but holds itself out to specialize in nuts, chocolate, and fruits. Located in the heart of Piccadilly, the store is always quite busy, though the staff is friendly and willing to help. They have a number of truffles, but when we asked about a plain chocolate truffle (we like to taste the plain flavor so that we can easily compare quality amongst various chocolatiers), we were told that there was no plain chocolate truffle. Every single truffle is some form of praline truffle. What? This is so weird.

70% Dark Chocolate Bar

Apparently, the only way to taste the store’s plain chocolate is to buy a piece of a solid chocolate bar of which, even more strangely, they only have two kinds – a 70% dark and an 80% dark. We tried half a bar of the 70% dark.

While it is quite smooth and good quality, the chocolate definitely has an acidic undertone, which can be good or bad depending on your preference. We happen to like it, though more so in small doses. Because we were only able to taste a pure chocolate bar and not a truffle, it’s not really possible to compare it directly to other chocolatiers. And while the chocolate was good, it wasn’t spectacular, and I wouldn’t seek it out.

I’d say if you’re in the area and happen to like praline truffles in particular, this place could be a good bet. But otherwise, not worth seeking out for the chocolate bars.
